The European power sector is at a critical juncture. The European Union's 20-20-20 policy targets are driving a revolution in power technology and there are an abundance of old and polluting utilities that are in dire need of repair.
In the second half of the 20th century, Western nations' easy access to cheap and abundant energy, coupled with their ability to generate, transmit, and broadly dis- tribute electricity, brought far-reaching prosperity. However, the old paradigm can't sustain energy delivery from fossil fuels while also meeting mandates for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world.
